Wajir County
Wajir County occupies a broad expanse of northeastern Kenya between Isiolo, Marsabit, Mandera, Garissa and the Somali border. Wajir town developed around historic wells that supplied pastoral communities and caravans; local museums and heritage sites introduce this history. Livestock and camel markets remain central to the county’s economy and Somali Kenyan culture. Beyond town, flat bushland, seasonal water pans and open skies define the landscape. Visitor facilities are limited and journeys can be demanding, but Wajir provides insight into pastoral life, Islamic heritage and the long trading connections of Kenya’s northeastern frontier. Current official travel guidance should be checked.
