Kirinyaga County
Kirinyaga County rises from the Mwea plains to the southern slopes of Mount Kenya in the central highlands. Its upper forests provide access to Mount Kenya National Park, including routes and lodges around Castle Forest. Below, the Mwea irrigation scheme creates broad rice fields crossed by the Thiba and other rivers, with Thiba Dam adding a major reservoir to the landscape. Coffee, tea and horticulture thrive on the fertile volcanic soils. Kerugoya and Kutus serve as the main urban centres. Visitors can combine mountain scenery, forest walks, farm experiences and views across one of Kenya’s most productive agricultural regions.
