Vihiga County
Vihiga County is a compact, densely settled area in Kenya’s western highlands between Kisumu and Kakamega. Its green hills are planted with tea, maize and bananas, while surviving forest patches at Kaimosi and along the Kakamega Forest edge support birds and indigenous vegetation. The Maragoli Hills and Mungoma Caves are important local landmarks linked to community history and traditional beliefs. Mbale is the county headquarters and a useful base for short excursions. Vihiga offers travellers an intimate view of Luhya culture, busy rural markets and highland farming landscapes rather than a conventional large-scale safari experience.
