Turkana County

Turkana County fills Kenya’s remote northwest, extending from arid rangelands to the western shore of Lake Turkana. The lake’s jade-coloured water, volcanic islands and desert backdrop create one of East Africa’s most striking landscapes. Central Island National Park contains crater lakes and important crocodile breeding areas, while South Turkana National Reserve protects rugged dry-country habitat. Seasonal wetlands and springs around the lake support birds and pastoral communities. Lodwar is the main transport centre. Turkana culture, archaeology and geology are central to the visitor experience, though heat, long distances and rough roads require careful preparation and reliable local guidance.
