Makueni County
Makueni County lies southeast of Nairobi between the Ukambani hills and the Tsavo landscape. The volcanic Chyulu Hills form a green ridge of caves, forests and walking country, while Kibwezi Forest protects groundwater-fed woodland around the upper reaches of the Tsavo ecosystem. Routes through the county also lead toward Mzima Springs in neighbouring Tsavo West National Park. The cooler Mbooni Hills contrast with dry lowlands planted with mangoes and other resilient crops. Wote is the county headquarters. Makueni suits road travellers seeking volcanic scenery, hiking, rural Kamba culture and a quieter approach to Kenya’s southeastern parks.
