Garissa County

Garissa County lies in northeastern Kenya, where semi-arid plains meet the broad Tana River. Garissa town is the region’s principal commercial centre and has a major livestock market reflecting the pastoral economy. Arawale National Reserve and community conservation areas such as Ishaqbini protect dryland habitats associated with the critically endangered hirola antelope. Along the Tana, riverine vegetation supports farms, birds and wildlife in sharp contrast with the surrounding scrub. Somali Kenyan culture, camel herding and local markets define much of the county’s character. Visitors should plan carefully because distances are long and travel conditions vary.
