Elgeyo Marakwet County

Elgeyo Marakwet County drops dramatically from cool highlands into the Kerio Valley in Kenya’s western Rift. Viewpoints along the Elgeyo Escarpment reveal cliffs, farmland and the valley floor far below. Rimoi National Reserve protects elephants and other dry-country wildlife beside the Kerio River, while Torok Waterfall descends from the escarpment near Iten. Iten is internationally known as a high-altitude training centre for distance runners. Beyond athletics, visitors come for hiking, paragliding, birdwatching and Marakwet cultural landscapes, including traditional irrigation channels that carry water across the dry valley slopes.
