Mandera County

Mandera County forms Kenya’s far northeastern corner, bordering both Ethiopia and Somalia. The seasonal Dawa River traces part of the northern boundary and supports pockets of farming and riverine vegetation within an otherwise arid landscape. Mandera town is the administrative centre and an important cross-border trading hub. Somali Kenyan pastoral traditions, camel and livestock markets, Islamic heritage and movement between neighbouring communities shape the county’s identity. Tourism facilities are limited, but the region offers insight into Kenya’s remote borderlands and resilient desert livelihoods. Visitors should obtain current official travel advice and arrange experienced local support before making a journey.
