Meru County
Meru County lies east and northeast of Mount Kenya, ranging from cool highlands to warmer low country. Meru National Park is its signature attraction, a comparatively uncrowded wilderness crossed by numerous rivers and known for elephants, big cats, rhinos and diverse birdlife. The park is closely associated with Elsa the lioness and the conservation story told in Born Free. Higher parts of the county provide access to Mount Kenya’s forests and mountain scenery. Meru town is the main commercial base, surrounded by productive farms. Visitors can combine a remote safari with highland drives, local markets and routes into northern Kenya.
